If your pet has left you a not so pleasant surprise on your carpet it can completely ruin the look and smell of your room. Here are a few ways you can remove pet stains from carpet fibres and what you should do if nothing you try works.
Removing Fresh Stains
If your pet stained your carpet and you immediately notice it while it is still wet, the first thing you need to do is lay down a poultice. A poultice is any type of material that will be able to quickly absorb liquids—the easiest and most common poultice to use is paper napkins or kitchen roll. Apply the paper to the stain and then place a heavy object on top of the paper and leave it for 10 minutes.
After 10 minutes, remove the poultice and rewet the stain with a little water. At this point you can use an enzymatic cleaner to break down the proteins in the pet stain (and remove the odour). After you have left the cleaner on for its recommended length of time, add another poultice like before and leave the heavy object on top overnight.
At this point you should be able to vacuum your carpet and be stain free. If the stain is still there you may need a pet stain removal service to steam clean your carpet.
Removing Old Stains
Removing old, dried stains is harder than removing a fresh pet stain, but there is still a chance it can be cleaned. One method that works without the need of any industrial cleaner is to use bicarbonate of soda and vinegar. Start by pouring a mound of bicarbonate of soda on the area that is stained and then add vinegar on top—this will create a bubbling effect.
Let the mixture bubble on your carpet for about 10 minutes before wiping it up. At this point use a poultice (as mentioned earlier) to absorb the vinegar mixture from your carpet. After the poultice has absorbed all of the liquid you should be able to vacuum and have a stain free carpet.
Removing Extremely Difficult Stains
Sometimes pet stains just do not come out completely. The proteins in the pet stain can leave a lingering trace of the stain or an odour. In these cases a professional pet stain removal service is required for deep steam cleaning.
